Visits from UK hospitals to China
Nurse Susan McDonald of St Mary’s Hospital Paddington working at Xinjiang Medical University Hospital, Urumqi
We brought Dr Martyn Hourihan, Dr Rebecca O’Connell and Health Adviser Rosemary Handyside to Chengdu from Barts & The London Hospital. They lectured and did ward rounds at Chengdu Contagious Diseases Hospital. Martyn, Rebecca and Rosemary are visiting patients, together with Eugene and Frankie. Rebecca spoke with enthusiasm about the role of the HIV doctor, because HIV connects with many different branches of medicine. In China, doctors are reluctant to work in HIV, because the pay is lower and they fear occupational infection.
In November 2007 we sponsored a group from Barts and The London Hospital to give a seminar in Guangzhou ( Canton ) aimed at high risk populations. The Chinese counterparty was the Guangdong Provincial Centre for Skin Disease & Sexual Transmitted Infection Control.
Barry & Martin’s Trust has organized and sponsored teams from UK hospitals to conduct HIV/AIDS workshops in Beijing; Anshun, Guizhou; Ruili, Yunnan; Liuzhou, Guangxi; Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Guangdong;, Urumqi, Xinjiang; Chengdu, Sichuan; Jinan, Shandong; Shanghai; Nanjing, Jiangsu; and Nanchang, Jiangxi.
